Living acceptance and community
Football training and competitions
for street children
Focus Congo organizes street children from different neighborhoods in Bukavu into teams. Training is not just about the sport itself, but also about creating a safe framework in which rules are followed and acceptance is practiced - and in a playful way! At least once a week, street children experience what is normal for others: being a completely normal child and being able to play. Forget about everyday life, at least for a moment. Focus Congo also organizes football competitions - even if the fighting spirit is awakened, the competitions are particularly about being together. For this work, Focus Congo procures jerseys, balls and food during training.
skate park
For street children
Our team built the first skate park in Goma for street children and young people of all backgrounds to create a safe haven for young people. It is a place where acceptance and community are lived and where even young people without perspective can give free rein to their energy, frustration and anger in a positive way. They are accompanied by our team, who support the young people, build relationships with them and show empathy. We try things out together on the ramps, sweat and learn. The skate park urgently needs to be renovated and re-equipped.
Voices from the project
"Going to training is always my highlight of the week. Then I can forget about everyday life for a moment and just have fun and score goals."
Bahati
16 years old, street child"Together with street children, we built the skate park and the ramps ourselves. It has become a safe haven not only for street children, but also young people from Goma. Children and young people from all walks of life skate here. There is nothing like that normally. There It moves my heart to see the young people letting off steam and learning to skate together."
Fabrice
Focus Congo team member"Skating has become my passion. The skate park is almost like a home. I feel safe here."
Imani
16 years old, street child"For years I was a street child myself and fell into criminal circles. I know from my own experience how important it is to have safe public places where you can experience community and be safe. Sports facilities are perfect for this!"
